But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 14:26

The Holy Spirit teaches and guides believers.  He does this through many different means, but the main way is through the ‘witness of the Spirit’ or the inner ‘anointing’ by which we know things.  John writes that, by this inner anointing, we “know all things” – 1 John 2:20.  He does not mean that we know Church history or we no longer need to hear preaching and teaching!  John is referring to things that not only are known by the inner anointing, they can only be known by this means.  By the inner witness we know we are children of God – Romans 8:16.  By this inner witness believers can sense a deceiving spirit – 1 John 2:18-20.  Of course, we use our minds to detect wrong doctrines, but we know wrong spirits by the anointing.  Not everyone who has a strange doctrine is of a wrong spirit, and not everyone who has right doctrine has a right spirit!  The witness alone can lead us to make right choices in our lives.  Acts 16:6-10 describes how Paul and Silas discerned the next place for them to preach the gospel.  The Holy Spirit communicated His will to them, both directly and through circumstances, including difficulties.  But whether life is easy or hard, no-one can know God’s will unless they are being taught by the inner witness of the Holy Spirit.  Keep a quiet heart; keep listening to the inner promptings and tugging of the Holy Spirit, communicating God’s mind and will.
