But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Philippians 3:7

The balance sheet of loss and gain is something that preoccupies every serious person. No-one likes to waste time or money, let alone life itself. Yet here is the measure by which alone we make up the balance sheet of our lives. The only thing in the end worth living for is to know Him. That alone makes gain. The rest will be loss. Of course, life is made up of many things, and all of us must work in order to live a normal life. But so many people are seeking a kind of life that is full of apparent gain, but not realising the incredible eternal loss they are incurring because they have made no time for Christ. Sacrifice is inevitable, we must all make sacrifices, but are you really prepared to sacrifice Christ in order to gain pleasure and riches? Or will you rather sacrifice things that are of no eternal value, to gain the eternal riches? Don’t drift; don’t let circumstances or other people make your eternal choices for you. Make them yourself, consciously and deliberately each day.
