June 26

By His Spirit He adorned the heavens; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent. Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways, and how small a whisper we hear of Him! But the thunder of His power who can understand? Job 26:13-14

God is greater than any of us can ever conceive. How glorious is His creative power in speaking the stars into existence! Our minds are brought to speechless wonder at the infinity and beauty of the universe. How great was the demonstration of His power in piercing the fleeing serpent, conquering our enemy at the cross of Calvary. But these demonstrations of His power are the ‘mere edges of His ways’. This does not mean ‘edges’ only in terms of dimensions – it doesn’t mean that God will one day create even bigger stars to dazzle us. No, these works of God – one in creation, one in judgment – are in themselves merely the edges of His ways. At the centre of His ways stands the matchless Son of God, with a different order of life and shining glory of personality. The centre of God’s ways is an outshining of love that makes mountains and stars seem insignificant, and the victory over Satan like shooing chickens from a back yard. The real ‘thunder of His power’ is being disclosed by the Spirit as He reveals the power of character that makes God what He is. That character was revealed at Calvary and shall be ever more unfolded to adoring hearts through all eternity. That power was applied to mankind’s problems at the cross, but will be seen one day in its own glorious setting, untroubled by enemies, and without the dreadfulness that terrifies sinners. God is dreadful in majesty, and as we are set free from sin, we enter more and more into the wonder of who He really is.
