For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1 Corinthians 1:21-24
Human wisdom meets a ceiling beyond which it cannot pass. No amount of concentrating, knowledge or learning can penetrate the Presence of God or understand the origins of the universe. No amount of strength, money, or sheer brain power can ever get any of us out of the appalling state of ignorance of God that prevails in human hearts. To do that, we need revelation, and the only thing that can ever get beyond the blank wall of our spiritual emptiness is faith, married with humility. We must come to the humbling realisation that we have been like fools and paupers in God’s sight, and that is not easy for competent or wealthy or educated or skilled people to accept as good news! It does not mean that God is trying to humiliate us or push our faces into the dust, but it does mean that we will get nowhere by parading our own abilities. We must bow before the great King, lay down our abilities and achievements before Him, and realise that they count as nothing. As believers, we do not deny the power of logic or intellect, but we realise that there are areas in which we are less than powerless, and that we must bow before God. God is good, and quickly ushers all who seek Him into His loving Presence. God’s ways are simple: He resists the proud and gives grace to the humble – James 4:6.
