Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you… Acts 3:6
Here is a divine ‘open secret’ – that we must receive from God in order to be able to give. Take care of the inflow, and God will take care of the outflow. Peter said that he had no silver or gold, which meant that he had no natural means to help the lame man at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple. Nor did he have any store of spiritual power of holiness or healing by which he could of his own will heal the man. The only thing that he did have was a living connection with God through the name of Jesus. He was not offering doctrinal knowledge; he was a conduit for the reality of God’s Presence and power. The only thing we have to give the world is what we have in the present moment from our relationship with Jesus. It is only as we draw near and develop an inner attentiveness to Him that we will ever be able to help another person. Peter was evidently in close relationship with Jesus, and this should challenge us to do the same. It should not discourage us from realising that God can use us today, if only we will be in a living relationship with Him.
