When His disciples heard it, they were greatly astonished, saying, ‘Who then can be saved?’ But Jesus looked at them and said to them, ‘With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’ Matthew 19:25-26
Notice the connection: the impossibility that we can save ourselves, and the promise of God that He will accomplish this for us. This is God’s promise to His people – that He will enable us to do what we formerly found impossible. The difference lies in the coming of the Holy Spirit, and our reliance on Him. What do you find so impossible? Is it some besetting sin? Is it prayer? Is it some characteristic that you don’t like about yourself? Is it some habit that you find impossible to overcome? Is it bearing witness to others? By the Spirit and by faith we are able to do all things, and this means things we find impossible, not things we were always able to do anyway! Christ looks on us and declares to us that we will do what we find utterly impossible. Do you feel defeated? Look to Christ and receive the Holy Spirit’s ministry and power this day to do the impossible. “By my God I can leap over a wall”, said David – Psalm 18:29, and perhaps we dismiss this as being the exuberance of a young man! God will make our tired limbs dance for joy if we will stand up and believe His unfailing word.
