When You did awesome things for which we did not look, You came down, the mountains shook at Your presence. For since the beginning of the world men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, nor has the eye seen any God besides You, who acts for the one who waits for Him. Isaiah 64:3-4
God is awesome in majesty, and He does not bless and work according to how much we seek Him. He does things that no-one could ever guess or imagine He would do. It is true that God waits for some response from our hearts, but His working is far above what we could ever ask or think. How slow we are to realise that, when we pray for something, it is not our earnestness that is the powerful force that makes God work. The majesty of the God of Isaiah creates a peace in the heart of the reader of these words. God will attend to our situation, and very thoroughly. When the disciples on the Emmaus road returned to Jerusalem, the apostles announced, “The Lord is risen indeed.” – Luke 24:34. Even when they realised that He was risen, they were still amazed and added the little word ‘indeed’ – i.e. He really has done what He said He would do! The same is true for us. God has made huge promises to deliver us from the guilt and power of sin, and fill us with the Holy Spirit. The day must come when we realise that God’s word is going to have its perfect way, and really accomplish these wonderful things. Sin really will disappear from our heart. Old, entrenched habits will disappear. Sometimes we have a sneaking suspicion that some things are so ingrained in us that God won’t really be able to set us free from them. Here Isaiah declares that God will do that and more. He does not work according to what we can really believe, or He would do very little! He takes our faith and does awesome things, so that later we stand back and wonder that it has really happened to us.
