And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. Revelation 1:17
John had walked with Jesus for the years of His earthly ministry. He had seen Him glorified on the mountain of transfiguration; he had seen Him in the glory of the resurrection; and he had seen Him by the indwelling Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. John had walked with Jesus for some 60 years by the time he was on Patmos, and yet when he saw Jesus unveiled, he fell at His feet as though dead. God reveals His Son to us in stages, because He knows that we cannot bear the full revelation of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Jesus is more than we will ever know or grasp, and while we know much about Him, there will always be a huge dimension of His Being about which we know so little. This truth should make us seek Him for further revelation of the Son of God. He is the unique One, the matchless One. He is not just more powerful and more loving than any other person we have ever met; He is unique in His essence. There is an ‘otherness’ about Him. He has come down to our level, but that should not deceive us into thinking He is merely one of us. He is of a different order of Being, and the wonder is that, as we gaze on Him, He lifts us to partake of His life. We were created to be lifted from one degree of glory, life and love to another. God reveals His Son by degrees; look at Jesus, and be lifted to fellowship with the Glorious One.
