Comfort….My people! ….Cry out to her, that her warfare is ended… Isaiah 40:1-2
The Comforter, the Holy Spirit, is the One who cries out to the people of God, declaring the incredible power and victory of the cross. The battle of the ages has been fought, Satan’s power has been destroyed, Christ has risen from the dead! The Holy Spirit has come to declare these things, in a way that makes the people of God rise up and enter into their inheritance. Once the Holy Spirit is in us, His work is not to tell us what we need to do. His work is to declare to us what God has done, and has fully completed. At the end of the Second World War, there were some soldiers in jungles or other remote areas, who carried on fighting the war, ignorant that it had finished. At last the news reached them: ‘It’s all over!’ The Christian can hear in his or her heart the constant cry: ‘The battle is won, the victory is secure, Christ has sat down and has been crowned Lord of all’. Let the Holy Spirit’s joy fill you. He not only wells up in our hearts with joy, but He also shows us the reason for that joy, and in that light it is a crime to doubt or be downhearted. The war has ended! Christ has triumphed!
