…the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:17
This verse implies a very small ‘distance’ between the Spirit being “with you” and “in you”. Jesus is clearly recognising that the believers are His – they are not worldly – they are distinct and different from ‘the world’. But there is a deeper experience of His Presence, in the power of the Holy Spirit, that comes through the entire surrender of their inner beings to Christ. This surrender is something that we give as we become deeply convinced of His love and care. There is such tenderness in Jesus’ teaching on the Holy Spirit. He opens our hearts with that tenderness and love. In fact there is nothing else that deserves our absolute surrender. Do not be robbed of your birthright, but draw near to Jesus in absolute surrender and let Him have your innermost self. There is a door within our hearts that we keep under our firm control. This is right, and no human being has the right to rule over another’s heart and thoughts; but as we realise the character and love of our Saviour, we are drawn to yield to Him our deepest beings. This is the last surrender, but it is the most significant. It is the most transforming step, and changes the tone of our lives and words and works. Let Him fill you with His Spirit.
